Hungary, currently chairing the Council of the European Union, has reiterated its firm commitment to strengthening the strategic partnership between Morocco and the European Union. This affirmation came during a meeting in Rabat on Wednesday between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Péter Szijjártó, culminating in the signing of a joint statement.
Enhancing Morocco-EU Cooperation
Hungary emphasized its unwavering support for deepening ties between Morocco and the EU, underlining the importance of extending cooperation into new areas. Hungary also praised Morocco for its critical role in fostering regional stability and economic growth, recognizing its strategic position as a key partner for Europe.
Morocco, in turn, lauded the success of Hungary’s EU Council presidency, including the adoption of the Budapest Declaration on competitiveness, a cornerstone of Hungary’s tenure.
A Robust Bilateral Partnership
This year marks the 65th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Morocco and Hungary, a milestone both nations celebrated by pledging to expand their cooperation in multiple fields. During the discussions, the two ministers acknowledged the strong momentum that has characterized their bilateral relationship in recent years and agreed to further solidify it through initiatives such as regular political consultations and economic collaboration.
In this regard, they highlighted the outcomes of the 5th Joint Economic Commission, held in Rabat on October 30, 2024, as a pivotal step toward enhancing economic partnerships. The two nations identified key sectors for cooperation, including agriculture, renewable energy, the automotive industry, education, research and innovation, and tourism.
Support for the Moroccan Autonomy Plan
Hungary also reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, backing the Autonomy Plan proposed in 2007 as “the most credible basis” for resolving the issue. Both countries stressed the importance of a UN-led political process and reaffirmed their commitment to Security Council resolutions and peaceful conflict resolution.
This position aligns with growing international support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative, reflecting a broader consensus among nations and reinforcing the Kingdom’s efforts under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
New Milestones in Cooperation
At the conclusion of their meeting, Bourita and Szijjártó signed a Memorandum of Understanding in the health sector, further broadening the scope of their collaboration. They also celebrated advancements in scientific research, innovation, and student mobility, showcasing the deepening ties between their nations.
Strategic Alignment
The growing partnership between Morocco and Hungary not only strengthens bilateral relations but also supports Morocco’s broader strategy to diversify its international alliances. Hungary’s vocal support for the Kingdom underscores its role as a critical player in fostering stability, security, and economic development in the region.
This strengthened partnership is expected to pave the way for continued growth and mutual benefits, marking a new era in Morocco-Hungary relations.
