On November 8, 2024, Saint Lucia reiterated its steadfast support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its entire territory, including the Sahara region, and endorsed the Moroccan Autonomy Plan as the sole viable solution to the ongoing dispute. This announcement came during a meeting held in Rabat between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and Saint Lucia’s Minister of External Affairs, International Trade, Civil Aviation, and Diaspora, Alva Romanus Baptiste.
In a joint statement, Baptiste emphasized Saint Lucia’s firm stance on Morocco’s territorial integrity, calling the Moroccan Autonomy Plan the “only credible, serious, and realistic solution” for resolving the regional dispute. Saint Lucia also welcomed the expanding international consensus around Morocco’s autonomy proposal, acknowledging the proactive role played by His Majesty King Mohammed VI in bolstering support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara region.
Additionally, Baptiste praised the efforts of the United Nations in spearheading negotiations aimed at achieving a lasting solution within an exclusively UN-mediated framework. Saint Lucia reaffirmed its alignment with the UN’s approach, advocating for an outcome that ensures stability and practical governance in the Sahara.
As part of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), Saint Lucia expressed enthusiasm over the enhanced diplomatic and economic ties between Morocco and the Eastern Caribbean region. Notable milestones include the opening of the OECS Embassy in Rabat in October 2018 and a Consulate General in Dakhla in March 2022. Both entities have facilitated deeper exchanges between Morocco and the six Eastern Caribbean nations, fostering a more collaborative partnership across various sectors.
Saint Lucia’s reaffirmation of support underscores the island nation’s commitment to Morocco’s territorial integrity and highlights the growing global recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara region as part of a sustainable solution to the regional conflict.
