Rabat, November 6, 2024 – In a significant boost for environmental sustainability in Morocco, the World Bank has announced a new funding package to support the Kingdom’s ambitious Sustainable Waste Management Program. This initiative aims to modernize waste collection, reduce environmental impact, and create a circular economy that recycles and reuses materials, reducing landfill dependency.
The funding, which is expected to reach hundreds of millions of dollars, will help Morocco implement waste-to-energy projects, improve recycling systems, and develop sustainable landfills in major cities and rural areas. These efforts align with Morocco’s long-term commitment to environmental sustainability, a vision championed by the government as part of its National Strategy for Sustainable Development.
“We are proud to partner with Morocco in advancing a cleaner, greener future,” said a representative from the World Bank. “This program will not only improve waste management but also contribute to Morocco’s climate goals by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting a circular economy.”
The program is expected to create thousands of new green jobs and empower local communities through training in waste management and recycling practices. Furthermore, it seeks to improve public health by reducing pollution and environmental hazards caused by unmanaged waste, especially in rural regions.
The World Bank’s support underscores Morocco’s leadership in environmental initiatives on the African continent, building on its achievements in renewable energy and sustainable urban planning. The Sustainable Waste Management Program is set to begin its first phase in early 2025, bringing Morocco one step closer to its vision of a sustainable and resilient future.
