Rabat, October 10, 2024 – In a show of enduring diplomatic ties, Burundi has reiterated its unconditional support for Morocco’s territorial integrity, including its sovereignty over the Sahara. This affirmation was made during talks between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, and Burundi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation, Albert Shingiro, in Rabat on Thursday.
Albert Shingiro expressed Burundi’s steadfast commitment to Morocco’s sovereignty, underscoring that the nation fully supports the Kingdom’s claim over its entire territory, including the Sahara region. Reaffirming the credibility of Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the only viable solution to the long-standing regional dispute, Shingiro emphasized that this plan offers a realistic and practical approach to resolving the issue.
“The Autonomy Plan presented by Morocco is the only credible and realistic solution to the Sahara dispute,” Shingiro stated, signaling strong alignment with Rabat’s position on the matter.
Furthermore, the Burundian official praised the efforts of the United Nations in its pursuit of a peaceful resolution, describing the UN as the “exclusive framework” capable of fostering a realistic and lasting solution to the conflict. His remarks come amid renewed diplomatic efforts and growing international recognition of Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as a solid basis for the resolution of the dispute.
This reaffirmation of support strengthens the diplomatic relationship between Morocco and Burundi and aligns with the increasing international consensus on the Moroccan Sahara issue. As Morocco continues to receive backing from African nations and beyond, the momentum behind its sovereignty claim over the Sahara gains strength.
With this endorsement, Burundi joins a growing number of nations advocating for Morocco’s territorial unity and calling for the resolution of the Sahara dispute within the framework of the Autonomy Plan, which is seen as a cornerstone for peace and development in the region.
