Morocco has officially qualified for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) after Algeria’s withdrawal from the tournament. The announcement comes after Algeria decided to pull out of the competition, granting Morocco automatic entry without having to compete in the final qualification round.
The withdrawal of Algeria, a significant contender in African football, has reshaped the landscape of the tournament, which is set to take place in Côte d’Ivoire. For Morocco, this qualification marks another opportunity to build on their footballing success, following their strong performances in previous CHAN tournaments.
The African Nations Championship, which is distinct from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), features only players who compete in their domestic leagues. Morocco’s national team, composed of locally based talent, will aim to replicate their past victories, having won the CHAN title in both 2018 and 2020.
Morocco’s automatic qualification is seen as an advantage, allowing the team additional time to prepare for the tournament. The North African country has become a powerhouse in African football, and expectations are high as they head into the 2024 competition with the goal of adding another CHAN title to their collection.
With Algeria’s departure from the competition, the 2024 CHAN is poised for a unique tournament structure, and all eyes will be on Morocco as they enter the championship as one of the favorites.
