Rabat, 04 October 2024 – The Kingdom of Morocco has firmly declared that it is in no way concerned by the European Court of Justice’s (ECJ) recent ruling on the agricultural and fisheries agreements between Morocco and the European Union. In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Morocco emphasized that it was not involved in any stage of the proceedings leading to the ruling.
“Morocco is not a party to this case, which concerns the European Union on one side and the Algeria-backed ‘Polisario’ on the other,” the Ministry clarified. “The Kingdom did not participate in any of the procedural phases and, consequently, does not consider itself concerned by this decision.”
The Ministry’s statement also criticized the ruling, pointing out “obvious legal errors and suspicious errors of fact.” The Ministry added that these flaws demonstrate a clear misunderstanding of the case’s realities or, at worst, “blatant political bias.”
Furthermore, the Moroccan government highlighted that the ECJ ruling contradicts the positions and approaches of competent United Nations bodies, effectively stepping beyond its judicial role. The Ministry drew a comparison to the British High Court, which handled a similar case with what Morocco described as “more discernment, impartiality, and legal mastery.”
Morocco has urged the European Council, the European Commission, and EU member states to honor their international commitments and ensure the stability of the Morocco-EU partnership. “It is essential that the achievements of this strategic partnership are preserved and that Morocco is provided with the legal certainty to which it is legitimately entitled as an EU partner on several key issues,” the Ministry stressed.
The press release concluded by reiterating Morocco’s firm stance against participating in any agreement or legal instrument that undermines its territorial integrity and national unity, reinforcing the country’s consistent position on safeguarding its sovereignty.
Morocco’s response signals its determination to uphold its partnership with the European Union while refusing to accept any legal measures that challenge its sovereignty over its territories.
