Key outcomes of the meeting included the announcement of Slovenia’s decision to open a resident embassy in Rabat and Morocco’s reciprocal intention, marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral cooperation. The ministers emphasized the need to invigorate economic cooperation in sectors such as energy, environment, logistics, agriculture, the automotive industry, and green technologies. They also proposed organizing economic forums to foster interaction between business entities in both countries. Special attention was given to enhancing collaboration between the port of Koper and Moroccan ports, notably Tanger-Med.
On Tuesday in Rabat, Morocco and Slovenia reaffirmed their dedication to enhancing political dialogue and activating bilateral cooperation mechanisms. This commitment underscores the robust and excellent relations between the two nations. In a joint communiqué following discussions between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, and Slovenia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Tanja Fajon, both parties expressed satisfaction with their distinguished relations and reiterated their mutual intent to further develop these ties.
Parliamentary cooperation was another focal point, with both sides recognizing the importance of inter-parliamentary contacts. They celebrated the official visit by the President of Slovenia’s National Assembly to Morocco in November 2022 and the signing of a memorandum of understanding between their legislative bodies. Future visits, such as that of the Speaker of Morocco’s House of Representatives to Ljubljana, were also anticipated.
Culturally, the ministers highlighted the importance of bilateral cooperation in cultural and academic fields to promote human and economic development. They stressed the necessity of strengthening exchanges at intergovernmental and civil society levels.
On migration, the ministers praised the excellent security and migration ties between Morocco and Slovenia, committing to enhance dialogue and cooperation. They supported a comprehensive approach to migration, emphasizing safe, legal, and orderly migration while combating illegal migration, human smuggling, and trafficking. Slovenia acknowledged Morocco’s efforts during its 2023 chairmanship of the Rabat Process, particularly in fostering return and sustainable reintegration.
Slovenia welcomed King Mohammed VI’s initiative to enhance Atlantic Ocean access for Sahel countries, viewing it as a means to make the African region a geostrategic framework for cooperation. They also praised Morocco’s various reforms under King Mohammed VI, including the New Development Model, advanced regionalization, women’s empowerment, and sustainable development. Additionally, Slovenia recognized Morocco’s success in hosting the 9th United Nations Alliance of Civilizations Global Forum in 2022.
The two countries acknowledged the importance of their strategic partnership within the European Union framework, emphasizing their commitment to strengthening cooperation in the Euro-African region to address common challenges like security, stability, migration, and socio-economic development. They reiterated support for international legality and peaceful conflict resolution, commending Morocco’s role in regional stability and anti-terrorism efforts.
Further discussions explored closer cooperation in internal security and law enforcement, particularly against organized crime, cybercrime, money laundering, fraud, and terrorism. Morocco congratulated Slovenia on its 2024-2025 UN Security Council membership and appreciated Slovenia’s inclusive approach to international peace and security.
Slovenia also hailed Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara as a credible basis for resolving the regional dispute under UN auspices. This stance is part of a broader international dynamic, with numerous UN member countries supporting this initiative. Slovenia’s support is significant as it marks the country as the 16th EU member to endorse the Moroccan Autonomy Plan.
The official visit by Slovenia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Tanja Fajon, to Morocco, celebrated the 32nd anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, marking a milestone in their continued cooperation and mutual commitment to addressing regional and global challenges.
