The Republic of Zambia has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over all its territories, including the Moroccan Sahara. This endorsement emphasizes the Moroccan Autonomy Plan as the “only credible, serious and realistic solution” to the regional dispute.
This position was articulated in a Joint Communiqué following discussions between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and Zambia’s Minister of Justice and Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mulambo Haimbe.
In the communiqué, Haimbe reiterated Zambia’s “full support” for the Moroccan Autonomy Plan, underscoring it as the viable pathway to resolving the long-standing conflict. He also praised the United Nations’ efforts as the exclusive platform for negotiating a pragmatic, enduring resolution to the dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
Bourita, in response, lauded Zambia’s supportive stance, acknowledging the positive evolution of bilateral relations. This relationship has been strengthened by Zambia’s establishment of an Embassy in Rabat and a General Consulate in Laâyoune in October 2020. Additionally, Zambia’s participation in the January 15, 2021, Ministerial Conference in Support of the Initiative of Autonomy under the Sovereignty of Morocco, organized by Morocco and the United States, further underscores the deepening ties between the two nations.
