Rabat – Daniel Kawczynski, a Member of Parliament (MP) from the British Conservative Party, has reiterated his call for the UK government to acknowledge Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces in the Western Sahara.
During a debate on the “recognition of Western Sahara as Moroccan” held on Wednesday, Kawczynski underscored Morocco’s status as the UK’s second oldest ally and a dependable partner. He urged the UK government to lend its support to Morocco’s position on Western Sahara, emphasizing the kingdom’s rightful claim to the territory.
Kawczynski noted the growing international backing for Morocco’s stance, highlighting the recent recognitions by influential nations such as the United States and Israel. He also cited a number of countries, including the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, and France, that have expressed support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as a credible solution to the Western Sahara dispute.
Expressing concern over the UK potentially falling behind its competitors in forging closer ties with Rabat, Kawczynski emphasized the significance of the Sahara dossier for Morocco. He commended Morocco’s efforts to promote socio-economic development in the region, underscoring the importance of recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara.
The question remains whether Britain will align itself with the countries supporting Morocco’s stance on Western Sahara. Kawczynski’s advocacy for this position is not new, reflecting his longstanding commitment to emphasizing the importance of recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces.
