In a recent diplomatic engagement, Denzil Llewellyn Douglas, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade, Industry, Commerce and Consumer Affairs, Economic Development, and Investment of Saint Kitts and Nevis, reiterated his country’s unwavering stance in favor of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara territory and its territorial integrity. This affirmation was made during discussions held in Rabat with Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita.
Douglas emphasized Saint Kitts and Nevis’s support for the United Nations-led political process aimed at resolving the regional dispute concerning the Sahara. He underscored the importance of the Moroccan autonomy initiative as the most credible, serious, and realistic solution to the issue.
A joint statement released after the meetings highlighted the conformity of the Moroccan autonomy initiative with International Law, the United Nations Charter, and resolutions of the UN General Assembly and Security Council. Saint Kitts and Nevis declared its recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Southern provinces and endorsed the autonomy plan as the sole viable basis for resolving the artificial conflict surrounding the Sahara.
The Federation also commended the socio-economic development underway in the Moroccan Sahara, attributing it to the Kingdom’s efforts and investments under the New Development Model for the Southern Provinces. This model has significantly empowered the local population and improved human development indicators in the region.
Additionally, as a member of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States, Saint Kitts and Nevis welcomed the establishment of an embassy of the organization in Rabat in 2018 and a consulate general in Dakhla in 2022. These diplomatic initiatives further underscored the strengthening of ties between Saint Kitts and Nevis and Morocco, reflecting mutual cooperation and solidarity.
