In a significant diplomatic development, His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, welcomed His Excellency Mr. Pedro Sánchez, President of the Government of the Kingdom of Spain, during his working visit to Morocco. The meeting at the Royal Palace in Rabat is part of the ongoing efforts to enhance bilateral relations and build on the positive momentum initiated in April 2022.
The Joint Declaration signed during the April meeting set the stage for a new chapter in the diplomatic ties between Morocco and Spain. The subsequent working visit has seen progress in strengthening cooperation, coordination, and partnership across various domains. The foundation of this collaboration rests on the principles of trust, mutual respect, ambition, good neighborliness, and adherence to commitments.
During the audience, President Pedro Sánchez reaffirmed Spain’s position, as articulated in the April 2022 joint declaration, recognizing the Moroccan autonomy initiative as the most serious, realistic, and credible basis for resolving the regional dispute. His Majesty the King expressed gratitude for Spain’s constructive stance, emphasizing its importance in advancing the diplomatic dialogue.
Both leaders highlighted the unique opportunities for cooperation between the two neighboring countries, with a particular focus on joint initiatives. The co-organization, along with Portugal, of the 2030 Football World Cup was cited as a significant lever for bolstering bilateral ties, fostering people-to-people connections and cultural exchange.
President Sánchez commended Morocco’s strategic initiatives, including the African Atlantic Coastal Initiative, the Royal Initiative for enabling Atlantic access for Sahel countries, and the Nigeria-Morocco African-Atlantic Gas Pipeline. These projects underscore Morocco’s commitment to regional development and cooperation.
The audience was attended by key officials from both sides, including José Manuel Albares, Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union, and Cooperation, and Emma Aparici, Secretary General of Foreign Affairs at the Presidency of the Government, from the Spanish side. From the Moroccan side, His Majesty the King’s Advisor, Fouad Ali El Himma, and Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, played pivotal roles in the discussions.
The visit was marked by ceremonial gestures, including a review of the Royal Guard paying honors to President Sánchez upon his arrival at the Royal Palace. The traditional ceremony of offering milk and dates further symbolized the warm hospitality extended during the visit.
As Morocco and Spain continue to foster a strong and constructive relationship, the recent meeting between His Majesty King Mohammed VI and President Pedro Sánchez signifies a positive trajectory in bilateral ties, opening new avenues for collaboration and shared prosperity.
