Rabat, 21/09/2023 (MAP) – The recent Al Haouz earthquake in Morocco garnered significant international media coverage, with no fewer than 312 foreign journalists reporting on the disaster. In a press briefing following a government council meeting, Minister Delegate in charge of Relations with Parliament and Government Spokesman, Mustapha Baitas, shed light on the situation and clarified the administrative deportation of two French nationals, highlighting the legal implications involved.
Baitas emphasized that the two French nationals who were deported did not seek the necessary authorization to report on the Al Haouz earthquake. He pointed out that their initial purpose for entering Morocco was tourism, and their decision to engage in journalistic activities without appropriate permissions led to the legal consequences of administrative deportation, as determined by the competent authorities following established legal provisions.
Furthermore, Minister Baitas highlighted the extensive international media presence during the earthquake coverage. A total of 312 foreign journalists, representing 90 media organizations, participated in reporting on the disaster. He underscored that these journalists operated in an atmosphere of freedom and transparency across all the affected regions.
Breaking down the numbers, Baitas revealed that out of the 312 foreign journalists, 78 were of French nationality, representing 16 media outlets. Thirteen of these media outlets had official accreditation to report on the earthquake, while three possessed permanent accreditation.
In his remarks, the Minister emphasized Morocco’s commitment to upholding transparency and freedom of the press. The country has been proactive in ensuring that journalists, both local and foreign, have the freedom to conduct their work without hindrance.
Morocco’s response to the Al Haouz earthquake has demonstrated its commitment to transparency, openness, and respect for the freedom of the press. The presence of international media, including French journalists, underscores the global significance of such natural disasters and the importance of accurate reporting to inform the public and facilitate assistance efforts.
