Bucharest – On Wednesday, Romania expressed gratitude to the Kingdom of Morocco for its “significant support” in the release of Romanian hostage Iulian Ghergut, who had been held in the Sahel since 2015.
In a statement, the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the release of the security officer from a manganese mine in northern Burkina Faso, near the borders of Mali and Niger. Iulian Ghergut had been abducted on April 4, 2015, by the group Al-Mourabitoune, which is linked to Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQMI). The statement also extended thanks to Morocco for its “significant support” in facilitating the hostage’s release.
According to the ministry, Iulian Ghergut is currently safe on Romanian territory and returned on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, President Klaus Iohannis expressed his appreciation through the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), thanking the “external partners who supported” Romania “in this challenging endeavor.”
