On July 5, 2023, Lorenzo Fontana, Speaker of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, described Morocco as a privileged partner for ensuring stability in the Mediterranean region during his meeting with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita in Rome. Fontana praised the strong relations between Morocco and Italy across various fields.
Minister Bourita’s visits to Italy, at the invitation of his Italian counterpart Antonio Tajani, marks an opportunity for bilateral discussions. This visit is significant as it is Bourita’s first trip to Italy since Tajani assumed office as Vice-President of the Council of Ministers and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Italian Republic in October 2022.
In Rome, Giulio Terzi di Sant’Agata, Chairman of the Italian Senate’s Committee on European Union Policy and former Minister of Foreign Affairs, underscored King Mohammed VI’s vision in combating radicalization and his commitment to promoting democratic values and freedom. Di Sant’Agata emphasized that these crucial matters require attention at both bilateral and multilateral levels.
During the meeting, Di Sant’Agata and Bourita discussed the positive development of bilateral relations between Morocco and Italy, covering political exchanges, cooperation on security issues, the economy, climate challenges, and active participation in multilateral organizations. They also highlighted the strategic and special partnership between the two countries. Both Italy and Morocco share concerns about the proliferation of small groups and entities across Africa that pose threats to stability and security on the continent.
Di Sant’Agata further acknowledged significant convergences between the Italian government and Morocco’s humane, egalitarian, and sustainable vision for development.
Minister Bourita’s working visit to Italy strengthens diplomatic ties and cooperation between the two nations. It serves as a platform to discuss shared interests and priorities. This visit represents an important step in building a strong foundation for future collaboration.
