Germany restated its backing for Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Western Sahara on Thursday, considering it a “serious and credible” effort by the Kingdom and a foundation for a mutually accepted solution. During a working visit to Germany, Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita met with Annalena Baerbock, the German Minister of Foreign Affairs, to discuss bilateral matters.
Baerbock affirmed Germany’s longstanding support for a realistic, pragmatic, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution facilitated by the UN-led process. Both ministers emphasized the exclusive role of the UN in the political process and expressed their endorsement of the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, which recognize the parties’ responsibility in seeking a compromise-based political solution.
Furthermore, the two countries reiterated their support for the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, Staffan de Mistura, and his endeavors to advance the political process in line with the applicable UN Security Council resolutions.
This reaffirmation of support from Germany underscores the importance of finding a peaceful and mutually agreeable resolution to the Western Sahara dispute under the auspices of the United Nations.
